The Lake George Casino Gamble

A murder mystery novel set in the Lake George-Glens Falls area of northern New York.

Investigator Alan McMendell finds plenty of suspects when the owner of an illegal gambling casino is murdered, but the prime suspect is
Al's former best friend, Charlie Payson.

Excerpt from Chapter 1, in which Al pursues Kenny Grisham, who has just shot Al's partner:

Alan loped across Warren Street. He closed the gap through a yard sloping down to one of the industrial sections of Glens Falls, home to the paper mill, limestone quarry, cement plant, the municipal waste treatment facility, vacant lots overgrown with trees and brush, and who knew what-all else these days.
Between two tractor-trailer trucks, the sun hung just on the horizon.
Alan squinted against the sunrise shining redly in his eyes.
   Kenny ducked around a semi.
Alan cursed and slowed. Losing sight of any suspect, let alone a cop-shooter armed with a 12-guage, is never a good idea.
Alan peered into the shadows under the truck.
  No sign.
A dank, vaguely chemical odor surrounded him. Breathing deep but easily, he cautiously worked his way around the end of the truck.
  Still no Kenny.
Alan felt the hair rising on the back of his neck.
This was not good at all.
Common sense belatedly said he'd pushed way too far on his own, ease off and wait for backup. He began reaching for his radio.
Alan froze when he heard the metallic snick of the action of a double-barrel shotgun being closed.
Like you'd hear after someone finally took the time to reload.
